The Girl

Queen of the In-Between.

Olga is a construct. She prefers Awaken. She is sixteen, and has been sixteen for 865 years. With her soul shattered, she can't die.

Created, walking death, teenager, witch, miracle, bogeyman, Queen of the In-Between. All of it, depending on when and who you ask.

Her story

Died in the commonwealth. Raised by a troll.

Twelfth-century Iceland is caught between the old gods and the new church. Seiðr magic is still a conflicting part of life. Under those boiling circumstances, through Ná Seiðr, the necromantic side of Norse magic, a grieving father brings his daughter back.

  1. 1158 Olga, fourteen, falls sick with the plague.
  2. 1160 She dies alone, isolated at the Þingeyrar monastery.
  3. 1161 Her father, the toymaker Von Weerg, recovers her body.
  4. 1171 Olga Awakens. Her soul shatters in two.
  5. 1200s As the trials begin, a keeper family smuggles her out of Iceland.
  6. Now Eight hundred and sixty-five years later, our story begins.

G i B is a cinematic exploration of bipolarity woven into a layered mythology, centered on a teen dark hero.

Skinheim
The world of the living

Numb.

In the Skinheim Olga is deprived of deep feelings and deep memories. The result is a detached judgment system that gives her godlike reasoning and demeanor.

Myrlond
The Shadowlands

Euphoric.

Whenever Olga is in the Myrlond, she’s flooded by her personal memories and deepest feelings. Without her other half to regulate these, they amplify out of control.

The split soul

Her emotions spectrum.

Her logic and consciousness live in her body, in our world (the Skinheim). Her identity, memories and feelings are trapped in the Shadowlands (the Myrlond).

Myrlond · melancholy The Orphan “Everything I am comes from what didn't stay.”
Myrlond · ecstasy The Holy Fool “Everything is alive inside me, at the same time.”
Skinheim · numb, grey The Tragic King “Everything exists, but none of it matters.”
Skinheim · malevolence The Mad God “If nothing has meaning, then destruction is mercy.”

Skuggi

Her shadow has a name.

Skuggi is Icelandic for shadow: the raw, unrefined edge of Olga's psyche. Neither good nor bad, the way a cornered tiger is neither good nor bad. When Skuggi takes control, Olga's eyes turn white.

Olga loves Skuggi. Skuggi loves Olga, and will protect her at any cost. After 865 years of practice, she still struggles to keep it from taking over.

Shadie · Myrlond

Her very shady black cat.

In the Myrlond, where she is known as Odqi, Olga is rarely seen alone. Shadie is a creature of the Shadowlands, shaped from Olga's deepest memories.

Wherever Olga drifts in the In-Between, Shadie follows: through melancholy, through ecstasy, through every dream state in between.

#DeadInsideButCute

The cuts are not self-inflicted.

They are Death Binds. She got the first when she was Awakened. A new one appears each time she Awakens someone else: one cut on her face, a matching one on the Awakened. Count the binds and you know when you are in her life.

Gifts

What she can do.

When Skuggi is in control, her gifts may fail to cast, or work with consequences no one can control.

Nesting Taking control of objects, places and living beings, for a short while.
Pandemonium Bending emotion and perception to induce fear, madness or confusion.
Scrying Seeing what the dolls she builds see, and hearing what they hear.
Construction Stitching body parts together. Very handy for assembling Broken Ones.
Gib Cleanly, quickly detaching a body part, more like turning it into a toy than butchering it. It won't work on the living.
Awaken Bringing someone back as an Awaken, like her. A gift and a curse, sealed with a Death Bind.

Body upkeep

The last-minute affliction.

To keep from decaying, Olga must replace body parts, and only parts from sixteen-year-olds will take. Human parts carry memories. With every part, she inherits the memories of the last minute of its owner's life.

So she never kills for parts. If she did, she would live through her own murders through the victim's pain perspective. It makes her life harder. It also makes it a little less tormented.
